Behind the Name: The Story of Martin and Son Quality Carpentry
William Martin!
The company began back in the day when my dad was still here. He was the originator of this business. He started the business with me back in 1987. I continued on with the business after my father passed, so I am the current owner, William Martin. But most people call me Bill! My dad started this remodeling business when I was still growing up. Together, my father and I remodeled homes, handling everything from construction to maintenance. To make sure that every project was finished smoothly and to a high standard, we also worked with our trustworthy connections, including plumbers, electricians, and heating guys, etc. Which, I thank them dearly as well!
We built my home together as well. I grew up in Holyoke, MA. My wife grew up in West Springfield, MA. We bought a property, and my father and I built our home we are still currently at. 28 years ago. About a year after we officially initiated Martin & Son. Eventually, a while passed, and he was diagnosed with lung cancer at a relatively young age. He is now watching over us. I continued on with the business. I knew that would be what he wanted in the end. So that is exactly what we are doing!
It definitely gets harder to continue on by myself, especially as I have aged. I have had temporary employees when needed, and I thank them all for the work and help they have provided throughout the time. I have two sons, both of whom worked with me for a few years once they were old enough. My oldest was only during the summer when he didn't have school, until he went off to college. My younger son worked with me summers through high school, and close to 4 more years after high school. Both my boys were a big help. I know neither of them would've ended up going down this path for a career, but I am glad they got the experience. All of our customers love seeing the boys! I greatly appreciate all of the kindness from everyone! My younger son, Brenden, decided this was not for him and what he wanted to keep doing, and made the big decision to join the military. Though work created a best friend bond for us, and it was sad to let him go, my family and I are so very beyond proud of him.
It's been extra hard, specifically this past year, as I was diagnosed with cancer myself in April of 2025. I have Metastatic Squamous Cell Carcinoma. It is a type of throat cancer. I have managed so far, though there have been better times than others, but I want to say an extra special thank you to my new worker, coincidentally also named Brendon, who has been an enormous help and, hard worker, through these harsh times. I am still ensuring to provide quality remodeling and building that has been going on for a long time.
